Fan of the Week – 12/5/04 – Sofia Co-Fan of the week

120504She stood on the bar and cheered and slapped high-fives with her fellow fans. She wore a navy-blue Buffalo Bills cap, and she sported a homemade sign that read, “THE BILLS ARE SUPREME, WHILE OTHER TEAMS JUST DREAM.”

Sofia, who’s hobbies include rock climbing, horseback riding, and playing tag, said that she’s been a Bills fan for “about four years now.” And she’s only 7. No doubt she’s following in the footsteps of her proud father, who is originally from Haiti and became addicted to the Bills when he attended the University of Buffalo.

The two of them came down from Rockland County on Sunday for Sofia’s first-ever  McFadden’s experience — having just heard about the Bills bar when they went to a children’s birthday party recently, and met the family of our cofounder, Matt Kabel. At which point, they were promptly directed here — and gladly obliged.

Fan of the Week – 11/28/04 – Debbie

112804“Debbie Does McFadden’s.” That’s what Debbie said about her first trip to our bar. She was visiting her son for the holidays, and the two of them cheered for the Bills together from the dining room. They’re from Lockport, just north of Buffalo, though Debbie was raised in Tonawanda.

Debbie, now a 52-year-old Weight Watchers weight-technician, said that she’s been a Bills fan her entire life and remembers the O.J.-years quite well. Her husband helped remodel Ralph Wilson Stadium back when AFC Championships were being won inside. And for her son’s birthday, that’s where Debbie took him.

Her son, John, a 27-year-old golf-course superintendent lives in Connecticut. But he journeys to McFadden’s every Sunday. Debbie raised him right.

Fan of the Week – 11/21/04 – Joe Michalak

112104Raised in Cheektowaga and educated at Sloan Vocational High School, Joe, now 78, has been a Bills fan since the franchise formed as part of the AFL in 1960.

He moved to New York City in 1953 to begin a career in journalism, which included nearly 30 years as an education reporter and editor at The New York Times.

Despite his new place of residence, Joe’s loyalty remained to Buffalo as he has been a season ticket holder for many years. A dedicated fan, he also attended the Bills’ first three Super Bowl appearances.

His love for football began in 1936 when he saw the  Redskins and Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh play at Civic Stadium in Buffalo. We know it today as The War Memorial or the “Rockpile.”

The Bills/Rams game marked Joe’s first experience with the Bills Backers, thanks to member Liz Marshall, who brought her great uncle to the bar when she learned he wasn’t feeling well enough to travel to Orchard Park.

Fan of the Week – 11/14/04 – Kristin Butera

111404Kristin has become a regular at McFadden’s this season, even making the trip with NYCBBB to Buffalo for the Jets game and tour of the stadium.

She is originally from Lancaster, then moved to Albany and attended University of Binghamton. Following college, she moved to New York City to teach 5th grade at MS-180. Kristin says she’s been a Bills fan “since I could hear my dad swear” and will be a Bills fan for life!

Fan of the Week – 11/7/04 – Victor Cohen

110704When asked to talk about himself, Victor Cohen replied, “I was there in 1980 when the Bills beat Miami.” He was referring to that 17-7 win in Orchard Park that finally snapped the Dolphins 20-game win streak over the Bills that had lasted an entire decade.

Cohen used to work sideline security at Ralph Wilson Stadium in those days. He even made national news once for an incident during which a crazed fan ran out onto the field. But now the 51-year-old college professor, who grew up outside of Buffalo, lives in downtown Manhattan, and has a daughter that goes to Kent State. She’s 24, and when asked if she was a Bills fan too, Cohen replied, “Oh, yes!” and is a fellow Bills Backer in the Columbus chapter, he said.

Fan of the Week – 10/31/04 – Tim Russert

103104Fan of the week honors for 10/31 go to none other than Tim Russert, who graced us with his presence during the Cardinals game.

A Buffalo, NY native, he is currently the Managing Editor and Moderator of Meet the Press and political analyst for NBC Nightly News and the Today Program. He anchors The Tim Russert Show, a weekly interview program on CNBC and is a contributing anchor for MSNBC. Russert also serves as senior vice president and Washington bureau chief of NBC News.

Fan of the Week – 10/3/04 – Dr. Stanley “Stan the Dentist” Zambron

100304About one year ago, we lost good friend and faithful Bills fan Stan Zambron. To honor him, we are making him this week’s Fan of the Week.

Stan was one of the original Bills Backers in the 1980’s at Name This Joint and was one of the most loyal fans at NYCBBB.

He’ll be best remembered by us as the friendly guy with the hardhat who loved the Bills and cherished good times.

Fan of the Week – 9/19/04 – Mike Coniaris

091904A Queens, NY native, Mike became a Buffalo Bills fan (along with his Mom) in 1984 when the then New York Jets announced they were leaving NYC to play in New Jersey. His first game as a Bills fan took place that season, watching Joe Ferguson beat the Jets he proudly  wore a #12 jersey for the first time.

He was rewarded by Jets fans by getting hit in the head with a stale pretzel.

Mike has been coming to McFadden’s for the past three years, and was a regular at Brother Jimmy’s Bait Shack for a number of years before that.

His first exposure to post-traumatic-stress syndrome occurred after watching Super Bowl XXV live in Tampa, FL.
